New patrol cars

CLOVER -- The Clover Police Department will soon add two new police cars to its force.

Last week, Clover Town Council approved the purchase of two 2008 Crown Victoria patrol cars. The cars, which were made available through state contract, will both include lights, sirens, radar, camera systems and other various equipment. One is priced at $32,420 and the other at $36,410, for a total of $68,830.

The new patrol cars will replace a 2001 model with over 116,000 miles and a 2003 model with over 139,000 miles.

School help

CLOVER -- Clover Area Assistance Center is collecting school supplies for the 2008-2009 school year.

Items needed are: pencils, pencil boxes, pencil bags, pens in red, blue and black, erasers, washable markers, dry-erase markers, crayons, colored pencils, highlighters, rulers, protractors, compasses, scissors, glue sticks, liquid glue, marble composition books, spiral notebooks(wide or college ruled), loose-leaf notebook paper (wide or college ruled), three ring binders, two-pocket folders, locker organizers, book covers, combs, hand sanitizer, tissues and backpacks.

Items may be dropped off at the center during business hours 1-4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays at CAAC, 1130 Hwy. 55 E., Clover. Also, Stuff Unlimited is a collection with store hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at Five Points in Lake Wylie and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday on Main Street in Clover.

Clients will be begin receiving these supplies the week of Aug.11.

Back to school help

CLOVER -- Roosevelt Community Watch is seeking school supplies or monetary donations for its 14th annual Back to School Bash, set for 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 2 at Roosevelt Community Park in Clover. Donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Roosevelt Community Center, Wilson St., Clover or can be given to any community watch member. Sights and sounds of revolution

Historic Brattonsville hosts, "Sights and Sounds of the American Revolution" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 5.

Let the sound of field drums and wooden fifes take you back to the time of George Washington and Paul Revere when Historic Brattonsville hosts, "Sights and Sounds of the American Revolution."

The Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps of Plymouth, Mich., a junior corps with youth ages 12-18, recall the days when fifing and drumming were used to relay commands to soldiers, direct unit movements and provide inspiration. Regular admission. The fife and drum performance is at 11 a.m. followed by Voices of the American Revolution: Readings from History at 11:45 a.m. and a military drill and weapons demonstration at noon. Ongoing hearth cooking demonstrations and tours of Col. William Bratton home.

McCelvey season passes available

YORK -- Season tickets for the 2008-2009 McCelvey performing arts series are now available. The Shady Grove Band will kick off the season on Sept. 20. Future performances include War Bonds, the Annie Moses Band and Simply Sinatra. Season tickets are $55 for CHM members and $75 for non-members by calling 684-3948.

English Class

Life Builders ESL Ministry offers free English classes for anyone who needs to learn or improve their English. Classes meet every week beginning in September. Teachers and other volunteers are needed to help with the classes. Training for new teachers will be in August. Classes are in Rock Hill, York, Clover, Fort Mill and Lancaster. Woofstock coming

YORK -- Woofstock 2008, a celebration of dogs and their owners, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 at the York Recreation Complex, 74 Fourth St., York. The event, organized by Dogma & Fetch, is York County's first all-dog theme festival that will benefit Recycled Pet animal shelter in Rock Hill. More details will be announced soon.

Calendar available

BETHANY -- The 2009 calendar "Bethany's Heroes: The Men and Women of WWII and Korea" is now available for purchase.

The calendar features 87 veterans from the Bethany Community, including more than 150 photos, first-hand stories and excerpts from the "Bethany Blab," a school sponsored newsletter during the 1940's that kept students and soldiers in touch with each other during WWII. Calendars are available at McGill's Store and Mac's Service Station in the Bethany community, Medicap Pharmacy in York, and at Bethany Elementary School. Calendars are $15 and proceeds benefit the Bethany Elementary School Historical Committee Proceeds will go toward preserving and displaying artifacts given to the school's historical museum, which is available to the public during regular school hours.
