Performing Arts series to open with a '50s flair

CLOVER -- The seventh season of the Clover School District Auditorium Performing Arts Series opens Tuesday with a blast from the past.

"Laughing with the Legends" is a one-of-a-kind production that brings vividly to life many memorable '50s songs and personalities from all corners of the entertainment world-including movies, television, Broadway and pop culture-using an array of singing, dancing, costume changes, dynamic impersonations, outstanding musicianship, masterful theater and fun filled comedy.

"Experience the riveting presence of Elvis, the hilarious antics of Lucy, the spicy, sparkling Liberace, the magnificent Marilyn and the electrifying Jerry Lee Lewis-together with Ed Sullivan, Debbie Reynolds, Fats Domino, poodle skirted teeny boppers and many other highlights from the unforgettable, fast paced 50s," said Program Director David Yandle in a press release. "In the talented hands of nationally-known and adored husband and wife team of Joey and Brian Gurl, this energetic, exhilarating production is highlighted by their engaging relationship with the audience making the evening a true blast with the past."

The show begins at 7 p.m. The annual series subscribers' reception will follow the show.

Tickets for the performance are $15, and a series subscription for all nine events is $40.

Season tickets are still available for the 2008-2009 McCelvey Series of performing arts events.

Shady Grove Band will kick off the series with its new-timey bluegrass at the McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St. in York. Other performances include War Bonds: The Songs and Letters of WWII, 3 p.m. Oct. 26; Annie Moses Band, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15; and Simply Sinatra, 8 p.m. March 21, 2009.

Season tickets: $55 CHM member; $75 non-member.

Shady Grove admission only is $15 CHM member, $20 non-member, $18 senior, $10 youth ages 4-17, 3 and younger free.
