SHARON --
Despite the fact that every town in western York County except York is supposed to have an election this year, the 257 registered voters living in Sharon will be the only ones outside of State House District 48 that get a chance to vote Tuesday.
That's because in the cases of Clover, McConnells, Hickory Grove and Smyrna either the only people who registered to seek officer were already sitting in the mayor's seat or on the town council, or as in the case of Smyrna, new people decided to run for the council seats, but the incumbents did not.
Turnout is not expected to overwhelm poll workers, York County Registration and Election Director Wanda Hemphill said.
On Tuesday Sharon voters will decide whether to give Mayor Beverly Blair another term or to go with declared write-in candidate Denise Grace. Grace's name will not appear on the ballot.
The at-large race for the four Sharon Town Council seats would have appeared on the ballot because five people officially filed to run. They are Kathy Montgomery and Johnny B. “Bob” Barnette, both of whom are incumbents, and Donald Kropp, Jeff Ramsey and Jerry Bradham. Lisa Bolin is a declared write-in candidate for that race as well, but will not appear on the ballot.
All voters will cast ballots at the Sharon Precinct at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church. Each voter will get to cast one vote in the mayor's race and will be asked to pick four of the council candidates. The council members are elected by plurality, so the four who receive the higher number of votes win the seats, Hemphill said.
York special election set
Between Christmas and New Years York residents will have an opporunity to vote on a replacement for former Councilman John Smith who resigned last month. The election has been set for Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Deborah Lowry, Melvin Roberts and Geri Wray have all filed for the seat. The winner will serve the remainder of Smith's unfinished term.
